Drafts

First Draft:
This is my first draft i have added the mast head, tagline, date and price. Now I will focus on background colour maybe to change it make it more christmas themed. Also i will add cover-lines and my main image. Changes i may possibly make to what i have done now is adding snow flakes to make it more christmas themed.

My second draft i decided to add snow flakes and a plug and puff to start the contents of my magazine. I used the snowflakes to make my magazine have a christmas feel to it. Next lesson I will begin to add the contents of my front cover by adding cover lines.

This week i added cover lines and a barcode to the left hand side of my magazine following the traditional conventions of a magazine front cover. Next lesson i will be incorporating my main image.

This lesson i basically finished my magazine front cover it changed drastically from my original plan. I done this to aim better to audience and to fit the colour scheme of the colours my model is wearing. I now use a lot of bright colours such as orange and pink to appeal to the girly teenage audience i want to appeal to. My model is positioned centrally which goes against general conventions of a magazine as the model is generally placed to the right however with my image it works best being placed centrally. My model is mid laughing which is effective for my magazine as it may give the impression my magazine is fun and bubbly. Ive also added a picture of my own photography of shoes to add another picture to my front cover, i used this picture because most pop magazines aimed at girls add pictures of make up and clothing to their front cover as its what target audience like. Overall i am happy with my front cover however i will improve certain things to make it look more professional.

My contents page follows the general conventions of a pop magazine contents page. It follows the same colour scheme as my front cover, includes what will be in my magazine and highlights pages of importance to look at. It is not yet finished as i would like to add some photography of clothing to make it more realistic and to fill up more space to make it look packed with information and stuff teenage girls want.

My next draft of my contents page features more original images of shoes and various fashion items teenage girls would be interested in.

My final draft uses a lot of black outlining to really define certain things such as my title i chose to do this because it makes my title stand out more for the reader and audience.

My first double page spread draft includes all the content i chose to write about as well as a pink title of which i just about had time to fit in. I chose my story because it is insightful into Whitney's music and image, it would help boost her career and is the positive lighthearted story my target audience would be interested in reading about.

My second double page spread draft includes more colour and a photo accompanied by a quote. I chose to use the colours of pink and blues because they are stereotypically seen as a teenage girls favourite colour. In addition to this they are colours used through out my magazine contents and front cover. I chose to add a personal funny photo and a quote because it makes my story seem more down to earth and funny, as it comments on the average girly thing to do 'take a selfie'. This is effective because it will appeal to my target audience because they will be able to associate with this and take a chance to read over the story.

Panning for main task

Proposal:
I am aiming my magazine specifically at teenage girls around the age of (13-17) because this is the audience of which enjoys pop music the most and who other pop magazines aim their magazines at. I will use features such as gossip and stories of male artists as these seem to be things typically used by other pop magazines to appeal to their target audience.

On the front cover i will use an image of either a happy smiling female or a picture of a good-looking boy as these are the two types of images generally used with in other front covers of pop magazines. I will go about taking it by taking a straight on medium close up from about the waste up, I won't care about the background as i will get rid of it to use a plain background or maybe a themed background.

The genre of music my magazine will be themed around is pop, this is because from my questionnaire results pop music came out to be the most populist.

My magazine will generally be about things such as concerts, winning tickets for concerts, gossip on well known popular artists, up and coming stars.

My ideas for cover lines include: Jingle Bell Ball Countdown, X-Factor Rankings, Miley Cyrus gone crazy.

I have decided on a title called 'Love Pop' i like this title because i think its quite girly and cute. Furthermore i think i can do a range of things with this title for example with the word 'Love' i would like to change the 'o' into a love heart because i think this will make my title more cute and girly and appealing to target audience.

The type of font i want to use is like serif bubble writing kind of font, as i think again it makes my magazine more suited to girls so therefor more suited to my target audience.

I will use a cheesy tagline such as something like 'Like Live Love Pop', so something that uses lots of alliteration so it is easily remembered and liked.

Mine will be published around christmas so i can use a christmas themed issue for its arrival so i have lots to talk about and so it will be popular as everyone will have money to buy it. Also i think this is a perfect time to publish it as the Jingle Bell Ball is coming soon and i can advertise the chance to win tickets of which will persuade people. Furthermore i could include weekly gifts for the countdown to christmas to persuade people to buy it as people like free stuff.

I would like to publish this magazine every week so the information is constantly up to date and so it keeps the readers interested because if i released one once a month people may loose interest for it as there are other magazines they can buy that provide unto to date information of which they want.

My magazine will be of a normal A4 size as this is generally the size of most magazines.

For the contents page i would use colours i used with on the front cover of which will be christmas themed so i will probably be using christmas themed colours on my contents page too. This is because a magazine looks more professional when colours used through out are consistent. Furthermore I will use pictures of maybe like christmas trees with in my contents page with maybe someone dressed up as an elf pretending to be some famous singer as this will add a funny side to my magazine so again will appeal to my target audience because it makes my magazine seem fun.

Lastly my magazine will be at a price of £1.50 as this is cheep so will persuade people to buy it more because it is affordable. Furthermore most teenage girls generally don't have a job so rely on pocket money from parents so this price would be definitely with in their pocket money allowance.

Initial ideas:                                                                        Flat Plan:

photography analysis

In terms of eye-line you could compare both of these front covers as the Vanity Fair one has Lady Gaga's eyes completely in the third grid whereas the Source front cover has the eye-line of the man probably one the line of the third grid. The effect of both these positioning of eye-line immediately draws the reader to it.

The positing of both main images on the magazine covers is important as the Vanity Fair cover follows general conventions of a front cover by having the image to the left, in compassion to the Source cover of which centralises their main image breaking the idea of general conventions. However this could be done for effect by having the main focal point in the middle so the reader is instantly drawn to it.

Both images seem to be taken from quite a straight on shot however the Source is more of a close up as it mainly focuses on the face to emphasise facial expression, the Vanity Fair cover has a more of a medium shot of which focuses mainly on the body perhaps done deliberately because this is a style issue so her outfit is key.

Lighting of the face is emphasised in the Source as the face of the man is the brightest part of the whole cover, again this could be done in order to emphasise the face. The Vanity Fair cover doesn't particularly use much lighting perhaps because the main focal point doesn't need to be emphasised through this technique.

Reserch of Music Magazines

This prezi is about music genres and types of magazines with in them genres

Analysis of a front cover, double page spread and a contents page:

This is an essay discussing the representation of people in my chosen genre of music magazine. My chosen genre of music magazine is pop and its target audience is young teenage girls aged around 13-15.

Generally mise-en-scene of the main cover image and the double page spread image are that the model is generally posing in a rather ‘cutsey’ pose with a smiling, cheeky expression. As well as this they are generally dressed in really girly, fashionable clothes and props like camera’s can be used. This represents the target audience to be cute, girly and fun as well as this it also represents the musician to be like this as well. For example We Love Pop use Cher Llyod in their double page spread, she is doing a cute pose (taking a picture with a camera) this image perceives her to be cute, fun and cheeky however this is not generally the way she is in real life, its just the way the magazine wants you to see her.

Also pop magazines aimed at the same target audience as me generally use the colour pink, which is stereotypically a girly colour. This gives the representation that the target audience are all into the colour pink and no other colour, which is obviously not true but it is seen as the most appealing colour to a teenage girl as magazines are always using the colour pink magazines such as: we Love Pop and Tops of the Pops.

They also include, in terms of context, gossip and fashion these elements aren’t so much music related however they must appeal to target audience otherwise why would magazines include them. The fact they include gossip and fashion gives the representation that my target audience are to some degree appearance conscious and nosey into the lives of others.

Overall pop magazines portray my target audience for my pop magazine to be vein, nosey, girly, cute and fun through a range of different ways ( colour, main images, contents).

Web-based research into target audience:

We Love Pop:

We Love Pop's homepage online contains nothing but gossip suggesting target audience to be interested in gossip perhaps into the lives of others especially celebrities. This could be backed up by the fact we as humans like to diverge from our to day to day lives especially into the lives of others.

They also include linked cover lines on competitions, this shows that target audience are interested in winning things, perhaps because self consciously its known that winning something makes you feel better about yourself as well as target audience not actually being old enough to have a job, so having the chance to win something for free is very appealing.

In addition to this they mention getting your dad to 'swing' buy the shop to get you the magazine. This shows vulnerability and neediness with in my target audience, it shows that they are not quite independent enough to buy something their self. In addition to this the fact it says dad could be linked to saying 'daddy's girl' and the fact that 'daddy will buy you everything', showing that perhaps teenage girls can generally get what they want when asking 'daddy.'

Lastly the use of colour such as pink suggests that this is a popular colour of a girl, which stereotypically pink is associated with pink. However this just proves that pink is a colour that would more than likely appeal to a teenage girl otherwise why would We Love Pop use it?

Questionnaire (for and answered by target audience):

These results shows that target audience's favourite colour is pink due to all five girls saying they liked the colour pink the most. It also shows that they are interested in gossip, celebs and fashion. In addition to this it shows that they would generally like to read about boys as 3 people spoke about boys, this proves that girls like talking about boys. Lastly it shows that all but one don't read music magazines so in order to appeal to this target audience a pop magazine such as We Love Pop needs to include gossip, boys, pink more over music in some cases to appeal to their target audience.

Preliminary Task

Evaluation:
Overall I found using indesign difficult as from school I am used to using photoshop. So in many ways I was unfamiliar with how to use it. The hardest thing is adding and fitting images as you can't just simply add it you have to make a box and then add it and fit it to the frame, so I think it is very confusing to use. If I was going to improve my work I would have perhaps took an image that didn't have random bottles in it. However through creating both my front cover and contents page i learnt how to use it and I think create something half decent.

PRELIMINARY TASK PRACTISE

This is my Preliminary Task practise, overall i found it hard. I basically spent the whole lesson looking for an image of which doesn't fuzz as a massive image. So wasted lodes of time. However when actually making my student magazine and music magazine it will be easier as i will be taking my own images instead of looking for them on the internet.

Task 5

Current News:

-IPC Southbank announces the appointment of Rich Sutcliffe as its new digital development director.
-NME announces the launch of the Monster NME Radar Tour 2013, showcasing the most exciting new bands of 2013.
-IPC Media announces that Jo Smalley will be the publishing director of music brands, NME and Uncut.

Structure of the company:
IPC Board

IPC is a cooperative company governed by a Board, composed of the chief executive officers from eleven IPC members plus IPC's president and chief executive. The Board meets at least twice a year.

IPC senior executives

IPC’s President and Chief Executive Officer, Herbert-Michael Zapf, leads a team of senior executives that includes Directors and Department Heads who ensure that IPC meets its members’ expectations of excellence and service.

IPC organisation chart
IPC has three departments, each being led by a departmental director and a team of talented executives and staff that bring to their respective positions years of experience in the postal industry and in their fields of expertise.

Would IPC be a suitable publisher for a new music magazine?

-IPC has been associated with many types of magazine and target audiences such as: middle aged females (Marie Claire), 35-60 year old men (GOLF Monthly), young men aged 16-30 (nuts) and many more. Basically IPC has many brands of which would appeal to different target audiences depending on the genre of the magazine.

-IPC may be an appropriate publisher for a new music magazine because it publishes NME and NME is one of the longest running music magazines, it adapts well with technology so keeps people interested so therefor is provided with what it needs in order to still be successful. Therefor i believe it would be a good publisher to publish with.

-Types of music genres which may be published by IPC include rock and indie music

-An alternative publisher like Bauer may be appropriate as it is bigger so therefor has more money in order to produce and make the magazine the best it could be. In addition to this it has many popular magazines such as Zoo, FHM and Heat. Furthermore if you was to publish a music magazine Bauer would be better as it has a range of music magazines that have a range of genre's such as: Magic, Cool Fm and Music.

Task 4

One convention of magazine covers aimed at teenage girls would be the fact they all have a young, popular female models on the front either smiling or pulling a silly bubbly face. This is perhaps because the target audience look up towards some of these younger celebrities. In addition to this they may use younger celebrities because the target audience may feel as if their at a similar age to them and therefor may be able to relate to them. Lastly the fact there all smiling or pulling silly faces could be used to represent the magazine being fun, of which a teenage girl would stereotypically want.

Another convention used would be the use of typical girly colours, colours such as: pinks, purples and blues. These colours I believe are used to attract the eye of the target audience when buying because these are generally girls           favourite colours. Furthermore the use of the colours seem to be rather bright and hard to miss, so again the brightness of the colour used could be used for effect of grabbing the teenage girls attention.

A third convention used with in the front cover of these magazines would be the use of the puff and plugs. Puff and plugs could be used because generally teenage girls are either at school so don't have a job or at college with a job that pays minnimum wage, so I think these magazines deliberately have puff and plugs on the front cover to make the target audience think they're getting more for their money, by offering things like '312 NEW YEAR STYLE STEALS.'

Another convention used would be the use of serif font. Serif font is in typography, serifs are semi-structural details on the ends of some of the strokes that make up letters and symbols. I think magazines like this use serif font to make their magazine seem more girly so again it appeals to the target audience.

A last convention would be the use of the colour pink with in the masthead. I think this is because generally girls favourite colour is pink so by having  aping masthead will show the target audience that this magazine is specifically aimed at them.

In this essay i will be discussing to what extent should magazines be held responsible for the social ramifications of the representations they offer. Magazines are highly influencing through their re-presentations of the truth. Teenage magazines  are highly influential to their target audience teenage girls, as they have targeted the vulnerable and easily influenced. These magazines however can have serious ramifications as i will be exploring through this essay.

Watch Dog says in a Telegraph article 'teen magazines are to blame for the early sexualisation of young readers.' Their to blame because they provide explicit content of which relates to sex. With in their magazines they offer things such as 'sexy style buys', 'body tricks' and pictures of attractive men. All of these features of content link to sex in one way or another. If a teenage girl reads these magazines on a weekly basis it will eventually start to influence her, as teenagers are easily influenced.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/culturenews/4990907/Teen-magazines-are-sexualising-readers-says-watchdog.html

On Women's News it says 'Teen Magazines Send Girls All the Wrong Messages' . This article reveals how teen magazines are full of mixed messages, it also reveals how teen magazines put such a high pressure on to young impressionable teenagers on being skinny and being 'hot'. It highlights how influential these magazines can be in making a girl change their main priority to 'their bodies' due to always mentioning it with in their magazines. Perhaps now days teenage magazines have a big part to play in the upping of anorexia and starvation within teenage girls. As magazines influence them into wanting to be like the celebrities within them, so wanting to be skinny.

http://womensenews.org/story/uncovering-gender/031029/teen-magazines-send-girls-all-the-wrong-messages#.Ulaln9uF86g

Another article on Learning Web Connect says 'teen magazines influence teen girls daily. They pressure girls into looking and acting a certain way. For three reasons, magazines have an unhealthy effect on growing girl teens: it makes teens long for materialistic things, glorifies unhealthy habits, and has a negative effect on body image.' So again like the other articles it discusses the horrifying ramifications of teen magazines re-presentations. Again highlighting how for example their images of celebrities, who are skinny and perfect, can cause serious health problems such as anorexia due to teenage girls feeling as if they need to starve themselves in order to look like the girls in the magazines they read.

http://learningwebconnect.homeftp.org/thelearningweb/content/teen-magazines-and-their-negative-influence-teen-girls

Overall teenage magazines have serious impacts on teenage girls due to re-presentation of things such as what a woman should look like, although they believe a stick thin perfect celebrity is normal, it isn't. However a teenage girl is easily influenced and vulnerable so actually believes what they say. In teenage magazines i would like to see 'perfect body tips' and 'perfect celebrity bodies' removed from all of their magazines and perhaps see women celebrities of all shapes and sizes used with in their magazines to promote it does not matter what shape you are. By doing this i would hope to think it would reduce pressure on young teenage girls but also stop and reduce the amount of teenage girls with anorexia.

Vogue’s target audience is females in their late twenties to thirties. You know this through its genre of being more of a fashion magazine. Vogue is similar to the magazine Marie Claire for their content, however Marie Claire includes a range of different features such as global problems and events of which will appeal to a range of audiences. Whereas Vogue just specifically aims to appeal to its one target audience. The typical woman who might read vogue may read it for aspiration and distraction purposes as although they may not being able to afford the clothes and products being advertised, it gives them something to aspire towards and perhaps give them a want for that lifestyle.

This front cover may appeal to its target audience of firstly through the use of the colour red like on the models hair. The colour red would appeal as it's stereotypically seen as a sexual, flirtatious colour and generally the women who read vogue want to feel sexy and flirtatious.

Another way of which Vogue appeal to target audience through this front cover would be through the main image of Rihanna. This would appeal to target audience of women aspiring to be like her and feeling as though they're a part of her life as she is such as successful, sexy woman. Perhaps to escape their own lives and read into the life of her because they want an insight into what she's got. Furthermore Rihanna despite her successes is known to have a nice figure, which is deliberately shown through her tight, fitted dress, many women of this target audience would aspire to have this figure. So it would perhaps make them want to be like her. In addition to this her red hair and facial expression represents her being sexy and seductive of which many women stereotypically want to be. So by sticking Rihanna centre of the front cover instantly draws people to her due to brightness of her hair and  could potentially make them want to be like her and most importantly look like her.

Vogue also appeal to target audience through the use of the puff and plug 'THE 10TH ANUAL SHAPE ISSUE'. This would appeal to the target audience as women want to look at other women's bodies, especially celebrities as it gives them something to aim and aspire towards. It manipulates them into becoming obsessed about what they look like and what they need to look like, so persuades them to buy the magazine especially when there being offered something of which they're so obsessed by.

Another way of which Vogue appeals through this front cover is through the coverline 'EAT YOURSELF HAPPY'. This would appeal to the target audience as they may feel as if Vogue knows what they're going through and feel as if they're hearing what they want to here that it's ok to comfort eat. This is important as the reader will feel as if they have some sort of ideology and feel as if they belong to the magazine, therefor appealing to the target audience as they will feel as if this magazine is specifically for them as it understands. Women of this target audience stereotypically are known to be the most depressed so by Vogue mentioning it would make it all seem ok for them.

Overall Vogue has used a range of features with in their front cover to appeal to their target audience of women in their late twenties to thirties.

A main convention from all of these fashion magazines front covers would be the use of girly colours. Using colours such as: red, pink, purple and light blue. This is important as it immediately tells you the target audience is women so immediately makes women feel as if the magazines are aimed at them, no matter what their age.

Another main convention would be the use of the facial expression on the model as their all kind of posing and not smiling. This could  be used because the target audience for fashion magazines want to feel sexy and seductive, so the models have to look sexy and seductive.
